Protecting Kea in New Zealand's Alpine Environments
RFP Construction is involved in specialist conservation work helping to reduce lead exposure for kea, New Zealand's native alpine parrot. On many older buildings in alpine villages and remote locations, lead flashings and lead-based fixings can attract curious kea, which chew the material and can become seriously ill from lead poisoning. RFP works to remove these lead hazards and replace them with modern, non-lead alternatives.
Lead Removal Work
The work typically involves removing older lead flashings and lead-based building components and replacing them with new Colorsteel flashings and suitable modern materials. The aim is to retain the weather protection of the building while removing a known source of lead from the alpine environment.
Working With the Kea Conservation Trust
Much of RFP's conservation work has been carried out as part of the Kea Conservation Trust's lead-removal programme. Robert had already completed roofing and building work in Arthur's Pass before becoming involved in the programme and is now one of the regular contractors called upon for this specialist work.
- Removal of lead flashings and lead-based building materials
- Installation of new Colorsteel flashings and modern alternatives
- Roofing and exterior building work in alpine environments
- Working-at-heights capability and suitable specialist equipment
- Projects for both conservation organisations and private property owners
Building in Remote Locations
Remote conservation work requires more than building experience. Projects can involve long travel times, changing alpine weather and limited access to the site. RFP has used helicopters, boats and walking tracks to get people, tools and building materials where they are needed. Careful planning is essential when the nearest supplier may be several hours away.
Alpine Experience
RFP has carried out conservation and building work in locations including Arthur's Pass, Franz Josef and other alpine areas. Robert's experience working in these environments, combined with more than 20 years in the building trade, means he understands both the practical demands of the construction work and the extra planning required to complete it safely and reliably in remote locations.
